California Prop 65 Information

In 1986, the State of California passed the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, Proposition 65 (Prop 65) that applies not only to water, but also consumer goods sold in California.

Companies are required to place a warning label on any product sold within the State of California that may expose a consumer to one or more substances deemed by the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. The current list maintained by the State of California contains over 900 substances (https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/proposition-65-list).

Why is the warning shown on some Betty Lou’s product?

Safe and quality natural ingredients are top priorities for Betty Lou’s. Many of the substances on the Prop 65 list are not distinguished between naturally occurring in the environment (as in some of our ingredients) or are now present due to industrial activities (industry contaminants). Some of the substances accumulate in varying amounts, at different times, and different geographical locations around the globe and can be absorbed by plants grown in the soil.

The elements that trigger the California Prop 65 label warning on some of our products are naturally occurring minerals present in soil around the globe, and are absorbed by plants grown in that soil.

The substances set by California on the Prop 65 list are significantly different than standards established notably by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), World Health Organization (WHO), and European Union (EU).

Are Betty Lou’s products safe?

We are confident about the safety of our products. We are committed to sourcing the highest quality natural ingredients from around the world, and focus to ensure we have the systems in place to deliver quality and consistency for the products we produce.

All of our products that we manufacturer are certified gluten-free by Gluten Intolerance Group, a third-party organization. Many of our products are certified organic, and non-GMO verified that aligns with our belief to provide healthy, all-natural tasty options to our customers.

Our commitment to quality and safety is also demonstrated in our facility and manufacturing processes. We’ve achieved Safe Quality Food (SQF) Level 2 certification for our facility in McMinnville, Oregon. SQF certification is a rigorous food safety and quality program recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
